SEO Friendly URL Part 1: Permalink Structure

An SEO friendly URL is extremely important to online success. Choosing the right permalink structure is one of the first things you should do after installing WordPress.

SEO friendly URL Structure

Here are the two permalink structures I recommend.

/%postname%/

or

/%category%/%postname%/

Here are some reasons why you may want to include category in the URL:

  • Your URL will be keyword rich as it contains the keywords of the title and the category as well which is great for SEO.
  • It helps visitors and web crawlers to categorize the content of Your site. It will remind visitors where they are in Your website.
  • You are writing about different topics that do not show much coherence. Including category will help Google to identify these different topics of your website.

Some People always use /%category%/%postname%/ when building WordPress sites and they’ve got very good results.

If you choose to include the category in your URL, then you should keep an eye on the length of your URL. Don’t let your slug be very long because that will make your URL very long which is harder to share and it hurts SEO.

Why you shouldn’t include date in your URL? Because people like the latest, updated information. They are more likely not to click a search result link if the date is old.

Choose a good URL structure and Google will love your site. Once your URL structure is set, you shouldn’t change it often, or your backlink will be broken.

Broken Link Checker

If your write some posts and have included internal links in those posts, then you may want to check whether your interlinks are broken after you change your permalink structure. You can use a plugin called Broken Link Checker. As you can see from the following screenshot, I have 2 broken links.
